Welcome to our second issue of Observing Differently for 2019.

I hope that your year has got off to a good start and the rest of the year is one of eudaimonia for you, which is the Greek expression for human flourishing.

I’m very happy to share that I am close to completing the manuscript of Volume IV of Coaching to the Human Soul, which is titled “Towards Professional Artistry With Ontological Coaching.” I anticipate it will be available in late October and will keep you posted with progress on its publication.

Some reminders about our coach training programs this year …

  • The Certified Ontological Coaching and Leadership Program (COCLP) commences with a four day Opening Conference in Melbourne, July 11-14, the first three days being the Ontological Coaching and Leadership in Action workshop. You can do the three-day workshop and then decide if you want to continue with COCLP.

“This is not simply a coaching course or a leadership course. It is an experience in wisdom. I have walked away from this course with more than only ‘knowing’ about coaching or leadership. I apply my ontological learning to every aspect of my personal and professional life on a daily basis. Through the incredibly patient and supportive approach from those who lead it, this course has given me so much, whilst simultaneously preparing me for so much more. It is not only an in-depth coaching course; it is a course that could very easily, significantly and permanently change society’s understanding of how leadership and life can be approached”.
Deanne Duncombe, IT Manager, Canberra

  • The online program Bringing Ontological Coaching to Life (available to those who have already done an ontological course), facilitated by Ian Higginbottom from Canberra, is running again this year commencing on April 9.

“This program was a great way for me to re-engage with some of the core principles of Ontological Coaching and to do so in the company of other practitioners. I loved the interaction with others and the sharing of the application of the learning.”
Jeremy Stunt, Ontological Coach, UK

And finally, we come to this month’s article. Deanne Duncombe, a graduate from last year’s COCLP, has experienced great benefits applying her ontological learning as a leader and manager in the IT industry. In another insightful article on her successful ontological applications Deanne shares how powerful moods have been for her. I think you will find her article engaging reading.

Until our next issue...

Very best wishes,

Are Your Moods Serving You in Your Conversations?
By Deanne Duncombe

The power of moods in conversation really came to the fore for me recently when I received an email that from a colleague that was, in my assessment, one big vent. As I read it, I could feel myself becoming a little angry and a little indignant. Because it was the end of the day when I received it, I left work without dealing with it, telling myself that the right conversation in the wrong mood is still the wrong conversation.

On my way home, I started to think about why I had felt angry and hurt by the email, and I realised that a lot of the assessments made in the email, although not delivered well, were grounded. I had become angry because, quite frankly, the “truth” hurts. In my assessment, this person’s delivery of his frustrations was not the most useful delivery, however he was clearly suffering in some way and it was my responsibility as a manager to try to understand why.
