Welcome to Newfield Institute’s newsletter Observing Differently
In a very productively busy calendar year, not only has our reputation as the pre-eminent coach-training organisation in the Asia-Pacific region been further enhanced, it has extended to include South Africa. Also very pleasing is the expansion of our network of high quality ontological practitioners due to the increasing demand for our corporate services.
Mark Raymond is our author for this newsletter. In his first article, Mark reports on an interview with a current Vocational Graduate Diploma participant in regional Australia, whose business has benefitted greatly from the application of Ontology. In the second article, Mark shares a recent significant learning that occurred for him as an executive coach. I trust you will find each article informative and useful.
From all of us at Newfield Institute, our very best wishes for a safe and happy festive and holiday season and we look forward to remaining in contact with you in 2012.
With best wishes

Organisational Case Study
Small Business Improvement in Regional Australia
By Mark Raymond and Clark Scarff
This edition’s organisational case study is a Q&A with Clark Scarff, who is in the final stages of the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Ontological Coaching (DOC) with Newfield Institute. Clark has a very successful coaching, consulting and training business in Geraldton (population of 39,000), in regional Western Australia. Since starting the Graduate Diploma, Clark has applied the learning when working with his clients – with great results.
What stood out in my conversation with Clark was his passion for his work and being true to the body of knowledge of ontological coaching while keeping it relevant for his clients, ensuring it is a good fit for them.

Coaching Case Study
Being Authentic in Challenging Coaching Relationships
By Mark Raymond
As coaches or managers, are you coaching anyone who you think doesn’t want to be coached, or says they do but doesn’t appear to be listening to you?
I have been reflecting lately on what coaches can do to maximise the benefits of coaching. As coaches, we generally assume that the coachee will be open to coaching. I don’t think this is always the case. Sometimes coachees are told to have coaching by their managers and they aren’t ready for it; other times the reason for needing coaching might also be the reason coaching won’t be effective.
